Holi Utsav braj (festival of colours of love)

Mathura and Vrindavan are known for their Holi celebrations. As the legend goes, as a child, Lord Krishna would cry to his mother about Goddess Radha being fair while he had a dark complexion. His mother then advised him to smear colour on Radha, thus giving birth to Braj ki Holi. It is said that every year, Lord Krishna would travel from his village (Nandgaon) to Goddess Radha’s (Barsana), where Radha and the gopis would playfully beat him with sticks. Today, Holi celebrations in Barsana begin one week before the actual date of the festival, moving to Nandgaon the next day. In Mathura and Vrindavan, the festival is celebrated in different forms like Lathmar Holi in Barsana and Nandgaon, where sticks are used to create playful beats, to which young men and women dance; Phoolon wali.
Holi in Gulaal Kund near the Govardhan Hill, during which Ras Leela is performed, and Holi is played with colourful flowers; and Widow’s Holi at Vrindavan. The last is one of the most special and emotional celebrations for the widows of the town, who at one time were forbidden to play with colours.

Mukharvind: A testimonial of divinity

Mukharvind is a temple located in the village Jatipura in Goverdhan that lies at a distance of around 28 km from Mathura. In Goverdhan, the sacred hill called Shri Giriraj is worshipped by Hindus and taken-care by the Vallabh Sampradaya. Mukharvind temple is at the base of Goverdhan hill popularly known as the place of appearance of Lord Giriraj.

An Aesthetic face of faith and devotion:

The temple is located on the northern bank of Mansi-Ganga. It is the lotus face (Mukharvind) of Goverdhan. Goverdhan’s form is that of sitting cow. His hind part is puchari or the puchari ka lota. He has turned his neck to place his lotus face near his stomach, which is the town of goverdhan. His two eyes are Radha-kund and Shyam-kund. This is a beautiful temple of Giriraj’s lotus face at jatipura called Mukharbind.

Mukharvind temple is a big rock formed God located at the base of Goverdhan hill. This sacred place is also known as shringar sthali. The place is divine and witnesses several other sacred places of Saints nearby. To name a few are Shri Gusainji’s tulsi kiyara, Mahaprabhuji’s tulsi kiyara ,Shri Gusainji’s baithakji, Shri Girdharji baithakji, Gokul nath jis temple, Shri Madanmohanji’s temple, Shri Mahaprabhuji’s baithak, Shri Chandramaji’s temple, Dandvati Shila and many others. Every place has it’s own sacred relevance. Many famous Saints did worship these places and even now these places are full of Divine vibrations and energy.

Story behind Lords presence:

Dandvati shila is believed to have been six feet tall when ShreeNathji went to Mewar. Due to the shraap ( curse) given by Pulastya muni to Giriraj Govardhan it reduces in size each day. This Dandvati shila is already in the earth and so the land around it has been dug so that the darshans are visible to the devotees.

According to legends, Shri Krishna left Braj dham and went to Nathdwara for further duties. On request of Gopis and Brijwasis, Shri Krishna decided to come to sleep here for six months. It is considered that Shri Krishna comes to rest here for six months every year, from Vasant Panchmi to Dassehra. After the Sandhya Aarti at his Nathdwara temple, he comes at the Mukharvind Mandir in Shri Govardhan to give Shayan Darshans. During this period, his presence is very live and can be felt by the receptive devotees.

The main offering to the divine deity is milk. People across the world come to worship. Abhishek, a special pooja offered to God to please him, can be done here by the devotee. During festival period, a huge crowd is witnessed. Annakut is organized here. Annakut is a special offering to God just a day after Dipawali.
Hundreds of devotees visit daily and offer milk and flowers to the deity etc.

Divine ritual of Goverdhan:

Many begin their parikrama, from Giriraj Ji Mukharbind Goverdhan. Some people do parikrama walking with a pitcher of milk, with the milk flowing slowly through the pitcher in a stream. This is known as the doodh dhaar parikrama.

Visiting Vrindavan was a life-changing experience for me. The town is a treasure trove of ancient temples and sacred sites associated with Lord Krishna. I was in awe as I explored the famous Banke Bihari Temple, where devotees gather to catch a glimpse of the deity. The Radha Raman Temple was equally captivating, with its exquisite architecture and soothing chants.

My visit to Vrindavan was an enchanting and spiritual experience. The town is steeped in Hindu mythology and is considered one of the holiest places in India. As I walked through the narrow lanes, I could feel a sense of serenity and devotion in the air. The temples were magnificent, adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant colors. Witnessing the evening aarti (prayer ceremony) on the banks of the Yamuna River was truly mesmerizing.

Vrindavan is a hidden gem that transports you to a different world altogether. From the moment I entered the town, I was surrounded by the divine aura and the rhythmic chants of 'Hare Krishna.' The temples were stunning, each with its own unique charm. The ISKCON temple, in particular, left me awe-struck with its grandeur and the melodious kirtans (devotional songs) that filled the air
