Shri Bankey Bihari Ji Temple

Bankey Bihari Temple is the most famous temple in the Vrindavan and also a very popular tourist attraction as the temple is surrounded by the city’s most revered food hub .The temple is a tribute to the mischievous Lord Krishna. The name “Banke” is derived because the idol of lord Krishna is bent at three angles and “Bihari” means the supreme enjoyer. This charismatic idol was built in 1860 and poses to be a remarkable work by the Rajasthani architecture. At Bankey Bihari Ji Mandir the supreme power of the universe is pampered like a small child and this is the reason temple doesn’t have the tradition of Mangala (early) morning aarti , so that lord is not disturbed by morning bells and have complete rest. Mangla Arti here is done only once a year on the occasion of Janmashtami. The idol of Bankey Bihari Ji is at regular intervals covered with curtains and it is only on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya that his feet is shown to the devotees.

Bankey Bihari Temple was established by Swami Haridas (Lalita Sakhi in Dvapara Yuga), a guru of the famous singer Tansen. By his sangeet sadhana, the Celestial couple Radha Krishna appeared in front of him and on the request of Shri Swami Ji the couple merged into one and the idol of Banke Bihari appeared there. The idol was established in Nidhivan earlier, but with time, it has been established here. Shri Banke Bihariji has captivated lacs of devotees with his cutting eyes, bewitching smile and enticing form. Even today a great number of devotees has experienced his miracles. About Shri Bankey Bihari Ji Temple

Banke Bihari Temple is a Vaishnavite Hindu temple situated in the town of Vrindavan, Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, India. The temple is dedicated to Banke Bihari who is believed to be the combined form of Radha and Krishna. Banke Bihari was originally worshipped at Nidhivan, Vrindavan. Later, when Banke Bihari temple was constructed around 1864, the icon of Banke Bihari was moved to new temple.

The icon of Radha Krishna’s united form stands in the Tribhanga posture. Swami Haridas originally worshipped this devotional image under the name of Kunj-Bihari (“one who enjoys in the groves (Kunj) of Vrindavan”).

‘Bānke’ means ‘bent’, and ‘Bihāri’ or ‘Vihāri’ means ‘enjoyer’. This is how Kṛiṣhṇa, who is bent in three places, got the name “Bānke Bihāri”. According to Śrī Brahma-saḿhitā (verse 5.31), Brahma says the following about Kṛishna

“I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, round whose neck is swinging a garland of flowers beautified with the moon-locket, whose two hands are adorned with the flute and jewelled ornaments, who always revels in pastimes of love, whose graceful threefold-bending form of Śyāmasundara is eternally manifest.”

Visiting Vrindavan was a life-changing experience for me. The town is a treasure trove of ancient temples and sacred sites associated with Lord Krishna. I was in awe as I explored the famous Banke Bihari Temple, where devotees gather to catch a glimpse of the deity. The Radha Raman Temple was equally captivating, with its exquisite architecture and soothing chants.

My visit to Vrindavan was an enchanting and spiritual experience. The town is steeped in Hindu mythology and is considered one of the holiest places in India. As I walked through the narrow lanes, I could feel a sense of serenity and devotion in the air. The temples were magnificent, adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant colors. Witnessing the evening aarti (prayer ceremony) on the banks of the Yamuna River was truly mesmerizing.

Vrindavan is a hidden gem that transports you to a different world altogether. From the moment I entered the town, I was surrounded by the divine aura and the rhythmic chants of 'Hare Krishna.' The temples were stunning, each with its own unique charm. The ISKCON temple, in particular, left me awe-struck with its grandeur and the melodious kirtans (devotional songs) that filled the air
